Sioux Falls Jefferson Dominates Harrisburg to Reach Class 11AAA State Championship

Jefferson Secures Championship Berth with 58-20 Semifinal Rout

Sioux Falls Jefferson punched its ticket to the Class 11AAA state championship game on Friday night, delivering a 58-20 victory over Harrisburg in a semifinal matchup at Howard Wood Field. The Cavaliers, now 11-0 on the season, dominated both sides of the ball to secure their second state title appearance in the five-year history of the westside school.

The outcome was never truly in doubt after a blistering first half that saw Jefferson put 51 points on the board. According to reporting from Sioux Falls Live, the Cavaliers’ offensive machine generated 481 total yards, while their defense stifled the Tigers, limiting them to just 217 yards of total offense.

Senior quarterback Cason Mediger spearheaded the effort, finishing 20-of-23 passing for 231 yards and three touchdowns. His primary connection was with receiver Jase Unzen, who hauled in 11 catches for 132 yards and a score. The ground game proved equally lethal, as Quentin Hudelson, Anthony Patron, and Boston Bryant combined for a multifaceted rushing attack that Harrisburg’s defense struggled to contain throughout the contest.

Defensive Intensity Sets the Tone

The Cavaliers’ defensive unit, led by Beau Koerner’s six tackles, established early control. By the end of the first quarter, Jefferson had out-gained Harrisburg 153-13, setting a pace that forced a running clock for the entire second half.

I think they took that personal, and they wanted to prove a point. And I think they did that. It was a lot of fun to watch. — Cavaliers coach Eric Struck

Coach Struck noted that his team was motivated by external chatter suggesting the semifinal might be a closer contest than their previous encounters. By taking away Harrisburg’s ability to lean on their run game early, the Cavaliers effectively dismantled the Tigers’ offensive strategy before it could gain momentum. Harrisburg quarterback Jonah Young faced consistent pressure, including a pivotal sack in the end zone by Anthony Patron that resulted in a safety during the second quarter.

The Path to the DakotaDome

With the win, Jefferson moves one step closer to the ultimate goal. The Cavaliers are scheduled to compete for the state title next Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. They will face the winner of the semifinal game between Sioux Falls Lincoln and Brandon Valley.

For Harrisburg, the loss marks the end of a 5-5 season and signifies the departure of 24 seniors. While the Cavaliers celebrate their undefeated run, the coaching staff remains focused on the inherent challenges of maintaining intensity after such a high-scoring victory. Struck emphasized the importance of avoiding complacency, noting that his team has maintained a clear mission throughout the long season.

The efficiency of the Cavaliers’ offensive line, which Struck cited as a major area of growth since the season opener, will be tested once more in the title game. As the program looks to capture its second state championship, the focus shifts to the final week of preparation for the showdown at the DakotaDome.
