South Dakota High School Football 11AAA Semifinals Set for Friday

One Win Away from the DakotaDome: South Dakota High School Football Playoff Semifinals

South Dakota high school football teams are sitting just one win away from the state championship games at the DakotaDome, and the top programs in Class 11AAA are set to clash Friday night at Howard Wood Field, Sioux Falls Simplified reported. The road to Vermillion narrows this weekend, bringing familiar powerhouses and hungry challengers onto the same turf with state titles hanging in the balance.

In the opening 11AAA semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m. Friday, top-ranked and unbeaten Sioux Falls Jefferson (10-0) will host No. 4 Harrisburg (6-4). The Cavaliers are chasing their second perfect season in four years after surviving a brutal early schedule that featured matchups against Harrisburg, Lincoln, and Brandon Valley all within the first four weeks.

That early-season gauntlet included an August 29 meeting at the annual Tiger Bowl, where Jefferson walked away with a 43-20 victory. Yet the final score masked a game that could have gone quite differently. Harrisburg left 35 points on the board through missed throws, dropped passes in the end zone, and a fumble at the Jefferson two-yard line.

We had our chances in that game. I don’t know if the score does it justice. If we can convert a few of those, it’s a whole different ball game.

Harrisburg head coach Brandon White made that assessment, acknowledging the formidable speed of a Jefferson offense averaging 47.7 points per game. Jefferson head coach Eric Struck echoed the sentiment, noting that despite the Tigers’ four losses, their program culture ensures they will be fully prepared for the stakes.

A Familiar Rivalry in the Nightcap

The 7:30 p.m. nightcap at Howard Wood Field features No. 2 Sioux Falls Lincoln (8-2) hosting No. 3 Brandon Valley (8-2) in a rematch of the last two 11AAA title games. The Patriots claimed the 2024 championship 31-21 at the Dome, while the Lynx answered back last year with a 34-27 victory.

Lincoln opened at No. 1 before dropping two of its first three games, while Brandon Valley climbed to the top spot before slipping following losses to Jefferson and Lincoln. The latter defeat was powered by senior quarterback Brody Schafer, who threw four touchdowns and ran for another.

They amplify mistakes. Brody amplifies mistakes, and he blows them up. When you make mistakes, he spots them, and gets it done.

Brandon Valley head coach Matt Christensen pointed to that exact vulnerability as his team prepares for a Lincoln squad riding a seven-game winning streak. On the other sideline, Lincoln head coach Jared Fredenburg remains wary of Brandon Valley’s physical identity, pointing out that the Lynx consistently bring a heavy run game that looks identical year after year.

Seminfinal Matchups Across the State

Beyond the 11AAA spotlight, playoff brackets are tightening across every classification in South Dakota.

  • Class 11AA: Top-ranked Pierre (10-0), which has captured eight of the last nine state titles, faces No. 5 Sturgis (7-3). The Scoopers are seeking their first state championship in school history, having made just one prior trip to the Dome in 1983. Meanwhile, No. 2 Yankton takes on No. 3 Watertown (7-3), the defending 11AA champions who handed Pierre its only blemish in nearly a decade during the 2024 title game.
  • Class 11A: Unbeaten Sioux Falls Christian (10-0) averages 39.7 points per game and meets No. 5 Dell Rapids (7-3), the only team to hold the Chargers under 30 points this season. No. 2 West Central (8-2) battles No. 3 Lennox (8-2) after bouncing back from a regular-season ending loss with a dominant 47-12 postseason win over Dakota Valley.
  • Class 11B: Undefeated Elk Point-Jefferson (10-0) has outscored playoff opponents 70-8 and faces No. 4 Winner (9-1), a program with three titles since 2020. The other 11B semifinal pits unbeaten St. Thomas More (10-0) against 11-0 Clark/Willow Lake.
  • Class 9AA: No. 1 Parkston (10-0) leans on a defense allowing just 7.6 points per game against high-scoring Britton-Hecla (9-1), while 2024 champions Hamlin (9-1) face Platte-Geddes (9-1).
  • Class 9A: Kimball-White Lake (7-3) looks to continue its Cinderella run after shutting out top-ranked Timber Lake 38-0, taking on Bennett County (9-1). Defending champions Freeman (10-0) square off against Castlewood (10-0).
  • Class 9B: Unbeaten Wall (10-0) plays Avon (8-2), while defending champions Dell Rapids St. Mary’s (10-0) face an equally unblemished Warner (10-0) squad boasting the classification’s stingiest defense.
