Stock Futures Slip Following Strong Market Run
Major equity indexes hovered near record levels according to reporting by Mint, as investors prepared to sift through upcoming employment and inflation reports. The S&P 500 remained less than one percent below its mid-August peak, bolstered by support from technology and artificial intelligence-linked equities. Despite this resilience, investors prepared to examine upcoming economic data to gauge the future trajectory of interest rates and overall economic strength.
While the market-cap-weighted S&P 500 stayed up approximately thirteen percent for the year, underlying struggles surfaced across the broader index. Eight out of eleven S&P sectors fell into negative territory for September, with sectors including financials and utilities dropping about five percent.
Treasury Yields and Upcoming Economic Data Create Uncertainty
Market participants kept a close watch on the fixed-income market as a persistent selloff pushed yields higher, with investors demanding increased compensation for holding government debt. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed well past the closely watched five percent threshold, and the 30-year yield touched its highest level in more than two decades.

Matthew Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak, noted that recent fixed-income activity leaves open the possibility that market conditions could deteriorate quickly. To better understand how central bank policy might evolve, investors turned their attention toward upcoming indicators, including a key inflation gauge and the monthly employment report scheduled for October 2. Economists surveyed by Reuters anticipated the September payrolls report would reflect an addition of 100,000 jobs alongside an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent.
