Eighteen Helena Students Prepare for a Week of River Arts and Canoeing
For 18 students in Helena, Arkansas, next month brings a firsthand look at the country’s largest waterway. Next month, in November 2026, organizers with THRIVE Inc. in Helena and the Lower Mississippi River Foundation are gathering the students for a week dedicated to River Arts, featuring painting, drawing, and creative projects along the banks of the Mississippi River, according to regional reports.
The program culminates on its final day with a trip onto the water itself. Every participating student will board a large canoe to paddle out onto the Mississippi River. For many in the group, the outing marks their very first time experiencing the river that flows directly past their hometown.
Community Fundraising Nears Goal to Sponsor 18 Students
Organizers have set a cost of $150 to sponsor a single student for the program. That contribution covers a seat in the canoe, a life jacket, supervision from river guides, transportation to the river landing, and all necessary art supplies for the week-long curriculum.
Community support has already brought the initiative close to its target. The current fundraising effort stands at $1,670 out of a $2,500 total goal, leaving $830 remaining to secure participation for all 18 students.

Donations to support the student paddlers can be made online through the Lower Mississippi River Foundation donation portal by selecting PayPal and adding “Sponsor a Paddler” in the note field.
