Three people, including two minors, are in custody after Georgia authorities dismantled a plot to carry out a shooting at Cherokee High School. While the suspects planned an attack on the campus, the Canton Police Department stated there is no ongoing threat to the high school or any other school within the district.
Investigation and Arrests
The investigation began on Oct. 19 after the FBI identified “threatening social media posts” and alerted the Cherokee County School District Police and local law enforcement. On Oct. 20, police arrested a minor in Canton who was formerly enrolled at Cherokee High School. This individual faces charges of disruption or interference with the operation of public schools and conspiracy to commit murder.
Two additional suspects were arrested on Oct. 23: a 17-year-old from Metter, Georgia, and 21-year-old Michael Brandon Terry of Chatsworth, California. Terry was apprehended by the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI and is awaiting transport to Georgia. Both Terry and the 17-year-old are charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Evidence and District Response
During the investigation, authorities seized electronic devices, ammunition, and firearms. Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell stated that the department takes every threat seriously, noting that the safety of staff and students remains a top priority.
In a video address to families on Oct. 27, Cherokee County School District Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis described the thought of the alleged conspiracy as “devastating,” but expressed confidence that the district maintains safe schools.
Unresolved Details
Authorities have not yet explained how the three suspects knew one another. Additionally, while an attorney for the 17-year-old declined to comment on Oct. 28, it remains unclear if Michael Brandon Terry has legal representation.
