Boothbay, Maine, has been named an uncommon holiday destination
in America during a segment of the Today
show. The coastal town offers a festive atmosphere with unique holiday events, including a seven-week-long celebration called Boothbay Lights.
Elizabeth Von Tersch, senior editor of travel for U.S. News & World Report, described the town during the segment. Most people think to visit Maine in the fall, of course, for the beautiful foliage but I will tell you Boothbay does not hibernate for the winter,
she said. Von Tersch noted that Boothbay is full of cheer during the holidays, with visitors taking selfies with wooden trolls and witnessing Santa arrive by boat.
Boothbay Lights Festival
Boothbay Lights begins on Nov. 13 and features a lighted boat parade, fireworks, live music, rides on the Jolly Trolly and North Pole Express, a holiday festival, and a winter market. The celebration also features a giant tree made of lobster buoys, a unique Maine tradition.
Gardens Aglow at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
New England’s largest botanical garden, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, presents its annual Gardens Aglow event as part of the festivities, taking place from Nov. 14 through Jan. 2. The garden was named among the 10 best botanical gardens in America earlier this year and among the best Christmas light displays in America by U.S. News & World Report. Von Tersch called the garden enchanting
and highlighted its wooden trolls as a popular attraction.
A European Christmas Experience
The holiday town in New England feels like a European Christmas, according to Conde Nast Traveler. The feature encourages travelers to consider Boothbay for a different kind of seasonal escape from typical winter getaways, drawn to its festive atmosphere, local shops, and scenic harbor views. Santa arrives on a boat, and, of course, what is Christmas in Maine without a giant tree made out of lobster buoys?
Von Tersch added.
