Trump and Talarico campaign in Texas for Senate race

President Donald Trump campaigned in Texas on Tuesday, appearing in Corpus Christi and Lubbock to boost Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton and fend off a potential breakthrough for Democrats in a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office in 32 years.

Talarico Campaigns as Senate Majority Hangs in Balance

The campaign stops created a striking visual divide across the Lone Star State. Democratic Senate challenger James Talarico held events on Tuesday in Midland, Amarillo, and Lubbock. The converging schedules set up a high-stakes local battleground with national implications for the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.

A loss for Republicans in Texas next Tuesday would complicate the party’s path to retaining its slim Senate majority. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to win control of the Senate.

Trump Celebrates Oil Agreement with Venezuela

During the Corpus Christi stop, Trump delivered remarks within view of an oil tanker moored near the Port of Corpus Christi. The ship contained the initial shipment of petroleum sent from Venezuela resulting from an arrangement Washington brokered subsequent to the removal of the nation’s prior leader.

“We’re celebrating the greatest oil victory in history. To the victor belongs the spoils, right?” Trump told the crowd.

An agreement providing the United States entry to twenty percent of Venezuelan crude reserves was made public by Trump back in August. White House officials confirmed the oil is slated to head to refineries owned by ExxonMobil and Citgo.

Weighing Paxton’s Past and the Campaign Rhetoric

Paxton was indicted on securities-fraud charges in 2015 and impeached by the Texas House in 2023. Following a deal with prosecutors, the criminal matter was dropped in 2024, and the impeachment trial ended with an acquittal by the Texas Senate.

Trump has publicly criticized his longtime ally Paxton, calling him “a pain in the ass sometimes.” Throughout his campaigning, Trump launched sharp attacks against Talarico, claiming the candidate stands against Texas values concerning topics like transgender rights, immigration, and oil extraction.

Congressional Map Redrawing Sparks Redistricting Arms Race

Beyond the Senate contest, contentious map-redrawing efforts cloud the Texas midterm elections. Trump pushed Texas Republicans last year to redraw their congressional map in a bid to squeeze out as many as five additional Republican seats. That move triggered a redistricting arms race, with California announcing a similar plan to mitigate the losses for Democrats.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined the campaign trail to help show off the oil tanker. It is not clear whether Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, would take part in any campaign events, and his political activities have been limited since becoming secretary of state.

As voters prepare to cast ballots on November 3, the converging rallies in Lubbock and Corpus Christi show how aggressively both parties are fighting for the future of the Lone Star State.
