Victor Wembanyama Scores 30 to Lead Spurs to Seventh Straight Win

Victor Wembanyama scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in 26 minutes of play, powering the San Antonio Spurs to a 124-109 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night at Golden 1 Center to capture their seventh consecutive win in their opening game of NBA Cup group play.

San Antonio Controls the Game With a Dominant First Half

The Spurs took control of the contest late in the opening period after the Kings briefly claimed a 20-18 lead. San Antonio rattled off 20 points across the final 4:59 of the first quarter, fueled by three-point plays from Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper before Wembanyama capped the surge with eight straight points, culminating in an alley-oop dunk just before the buzzer to put the visitors up 38-29, according to GMA Network.

That momentum carried straight through to intermission. San Antonio built a 75-56 halftime cushion behind blistering shooting efficiency, hitting 25 of 42 shots from the field for 59.5% and sinking 10 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc. Wembanyama did much of his damage early, tallying 20 of his points before the break on 7-of-9 shooting.

San Antonio’s 75-point opening half marked their second-highest scoring half of the season, trailing only an 80-point half against the Kings on Oct. 27. The visitors extended their advantage to as many as 24 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Spurs Dominate Rebounds and Three-Pointers to Defeat Sacramento

While Wembanyama anchored the interior with his seventh double-double of the season and a game-high two blocks, the Spurs received matching 19-point outputs from Castle, Harper, and Devin Vassell. Harrison Barnes also contributed 13 points off the bench for San Antonio.

San Antonio distributed the ball effectively all evening, recording 28 assists on 38 made field goals. The team finished shooting 15-for-30 from three-point range and dominated the glass with 56 rebounds to Sacramento’s 44.

We have a lot of guys that can create for themselves or teammates and finish plays, and when we’re doing that we can be pretty tough to stop.

Foul Trouble and Historical Lows for the Kings

Sacramento struggled to contain San Antonio’s attack without fouling, committing 26 team infractions that sent the Spurs to the charity stripe for 42 free throws. Kings head coach Doug Christie noted the defensive dilemma created by the constant whistle.

Because not only are they a good defensive team, they’re even better when their defense is set, and that’s what the free throw allows you to do. When we were able to get in open court, we were able to find some things and create the type of 3-point shots and different things, collapse in the defense.

Zach LaVine contributed 14 points, while Leaky Black and Malik Monk chipped in 12 points apiece for a Sacramento side playing the second game of a seven-game homestand.

Both the Spurs and Kings are competing in West Group C of the NBA Cup alongside the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Portland Trail Blazers.
