Nine Killed as Learjet 60 Nosedives Into Palm Beach County Neighborhood
A private Learjet 60 carrying nine people plunged from 35,000 feet into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, erupting into a massive fireball that narrowly missed nearby homes and a busy roadway. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that everyone on board the aircraft was killed in the crash, which occurred around 12:50 p.m. local time near Cresthaven.
The twin-engine business jet had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed toward the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Flight data and air traffic control recordings revealed that the aircraft entered a steep descent, plunging at rates of 10,000 and 20,000 feet per minute before crashing in Florida.
Final Moments Captured on Cockpit Audio
Minutes before the disaster, the pilot reported encountering moderate turbulence and light, clear ice while cruising at 35,000 feet, requesting a 2,000-foot climb. According to recordings captured by LiveATC.net, the situation deteriorated rapidly as precipitation set in.
“We’re descending 8,000 – mayday, mayday – we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot radioed air traffic controllers. Moments later, the pilot reported an overspeed condition as the rate of descent doubled. The pilot delivered a final acknowledgment: “We’re going to crash into the ground.”
Impact Site and Evacuations Near Mar-a-Lago
The crash site lies less than seven miles from President Donald Trump’s resort home, Mar-a-Lago. Trump had been at the resort overnight before departing from the nearby and newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport aboard Air Force One at 11:55 a.m., roughly an hour before the Learjet went down.
The aircraft impacted near the entrance of a mobile home park, leaving a deep crater and scattering heavy debris across the roadway. Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores stated that approximately 600 residents were evacuated from the surrounding community and relocated to temporary shelters. First responders rushed to the scene as thick black smoke billowed over the neighborhood, and local authorities closed roads in both directions.
“It was a cataclysmic plane crash. It looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters at the scene, adding that there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities on the ground.
Ongoing Investigation Into Weather and Cause
Federal authorities have mobilized to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the steep dive. Weather conditions in the area on Sunday afternoon were poor, overcast with rain and lightning and winds from the east at 15mph, gusting to near 25 mph.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the ongoing investigation. While transportation officials confirmed the death toll of nine individuals, authorities have not yet released the identities or passenger manifest of those on board the private aircraft.
