The annual Wonderland Toy Drive and the Junior Police Academy are slated for a funding boost following the inaugural Charleston Police Department First Responder Pickleball Classic. Organized by the Charleston Police Department Citizen Academy Alumni Association, the tournament serves as a primary vehicle for raising resources for seasonal charitable drives and youth-focused initiatives across the Kanawha Valley.
Competition at the Nitro Athletic Complex
The tournament will convene at the Nitro Athletic Complex, located at 1650 Park Avenue in Nitro. The schedule is structured around three distinct phases of play: a community night on Friday, gender doubles on Saturday, and mixed doubles on Sunday.
CPD Sgt. Travis Bailes told 580 Live with Dave Allen that CPD representatives got a chance to test out the courts this week.

Players Age 16 and Older Register for Tournament
Participation is restricted to players aged 16 and older. To accommodate different levels of preparation, the tournament offers two registration paths: players may enter as established doubles pairs or register as individuals to be paired with a partner before matches commence. The entry fee is set at $45, with registration remaining open through the start of the event.
Funding Local Engagement
Beyond the competition, the tournament functions as a direct mechanism for sustaining the department’s community outreach. The funds generated are intended to cover the costs of programs that maintain the department’s local presence.
Registration Channels
Interested participants can register via a QR code or through the “Charleston, West Virginia Police Academy Pickleball Tournament” Facebook page.
