A family narrowly escapes a vehicle fire near Little Island

A Cork mother and her family experienced a terrifying ordeal earlier this week when their car suddenly malfunctioned and burst into flames on a busy main road. Shelly O’Donoghue was traveling toward Little Island with her adult niece and her two-year-old daughter when the vehicle’s engine began revving uncontrollably without any warning lights appearing on the dashboard, according to a report by Cork Beo.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, quickly escalated from a mechanical failure to a life‑threatening emergency. As the car gained speed, O’Donoghue discovered that the brakes were unresponsive. In a moment of high‑stakes decision‑making, she managed to bring the vehicle to a halt by removing the keys from the ignition and attempting to brake again, just as a fire began to ignite underneath the chassis.

While the occupants escaped without significant physical injuries, the psychological impact remains heavy. O’Donoghue told Neil Prendeville on Cork’s Red FM that the speed at which the fire spread was “terrifying,” noting that the car was completely engulfed in flames within approximately four minutes of the initial malfunction.

Mechanical failure and the race to safety

The sequence of events unfolded with startling speed. After bringing the car to a stop, O’Donoghue instructed her niece to exit the vehicle. She then took her two‑year‑old daughter from the back seat and handed the child to her niece, telling them both to run. A passerby joined O’Donoghue in an attempt to inspect the vehicle by opening the bonnet, but the investigation was cut short when flames were visible.

The danger was compounded by a near‑miss with the vehicle’s safety features. Shortly after the family exited the car, the automatic door locks engaged. O’Donoghue reflected on how close they came to being trapped, stating that had they been unable to exit, her only perceived option would have been to “climb into the back, cuddle the child and accept her fate,” as she believed there was no way they could have survived an exit at that stage.

The suddenness of the combustion was marked by “three big bangs” that signaled the front of the car exploding. The family watched as the vehicle was consumed by fire, an event that has left the occupants shaken. O’Donoghue reported that she has struggled to sleep in the days following the event, and her niece has also been left traumatized by the experience.

The unpredictability of vehicle malfunctions

One of the most distressing aspects of the incident for the family was the lack of prior warning. The vehicle had recently passed its National Car Test (NCT) without issue in the weeks preceding the fire.

When a vehicle’s engine revs uncontrollably—a condition often linked to throttle or fuel system failures—it can create an immediate risk of overheating or ignition. In this specific case, the failure was so rapid that the occupants were unaware a fire had even started underneath them until they were already evacuating the vehicle.
