Democrats Secure Wisconsin Trifecta and Flip Congressional Seats

Democrats secure trifecta in Wisconsin election results

Wisconsin voters handed Democrats a trifecta on Tuesday, securing majorities in both the State Senate and the State Assembly alongside victories in all statewide executive offices. According to a report from Wisconsin Watch, the results include an 18-15 Senate majority and a 53-46 Assembly majority, marking a significant shift in the state’s legislative control.

The election outcomes reflect a trend where Democratic candidates gained more support across the state than in previous cycles, even in several districts that remained in Republican hands. This shift was particularly evident in the state’s congressional delegation, where Democrats flipped the 1st and 3rd districts to create a 4-4 split in the House delegation.

The gubernatorial race saw a notable expansion of the Democratic mandate. David Crowley won the governorship by 8 percentage points over Republican Tom Tiffany. This margin represents a sharp increase in dominance compared to the previous Democratic administration; Governor Tony Evers won by 3.4- and 1.1-point margins in 2022 and 2018, respectively.

Democratic margins grow in Milwaukee and populous counties

The data suggests a changing map in Wisconsin’s most populous and influential counties. While Republicans maintained some ground, the margins in key areas have tightened significantly. In Milwaukee County, Crowley increased the Democratic lead by 9.2 percentage points, drawing nearly three times as many votes as Tiffany.

In 2018, the county held a 25-point Republican lead, but this year that margin narrowed to a 5-point Republican lead. Similar trends appeared in other populous areas like Waukesha and Dane counties, where Democratic performance improved.

However, the political realignment is not uniform across the state. While Democrats are making inroads in the suburbs, they are facing challenges in specific rural pockets. In Ashland County, located in far northern Wisconsin, the Democratic lead shrank by 8.5 points. Democrats have seen a steady loss of support in rural counties such as Lafayette, Marquette, and Pepin over the last three election cycles.

The Republican performance showed localized resilience in certain central and western regions. For instance, Tom Tiffany outperformed the 2022 Republican gubernatorial nominee, Tim Michels, in several of these areas. In Lafayette County, Tiffany secured 56.4% of the vote, a 5.4-point improvement over his party’s performance in 2022.
