Concord Christian Secures Historic Playoff Win
Concord Christian School achieved a milestone in its football program on Friday night, capturing its first-ever playoff victory with a decisive 49-21 win over Fayette Academy.
The game, held at Farragut High School’s Bill Clabo Field, marked a high point for the Lions, who finished their regular season with an 8-3 record.
According to a report by Ken Lay for The Knoxville Focus, the Lions wasted no time establishing control. Just 10 seconds into the opening frame, freshman quarterback Dylan Brown connected with Dasani Moulden for an 80-yard touchdown pass. This rapid strike was part of a 35-point first-quarter onslaught that effectively dismantled the visitors from Somerville.
Lions coach Steve Matthews noted that the quick start was a strategic necessity against the Wing-T offensive scheme employed by Fayette Academy. “We knew that they had a long bus ride and we wanted to get them early,” Matthews said. “We like to strike quickly, especially against a Wing-T team, try to get them in a hole to where it takes them off what they like to do.”
Concord Christian Offense Racks up 547 Total Yards
The Concord Christian offense proved difficult to contain throughout the contest, racking up 547 yards of total offense. The production was balanced between the ground and the air, with the team recording 289 passing yards and 258 rushing yards.
| Statistic | Performance |
|---|---|
| Total Offense | 547 Yards |
| Passing Yards | 289 Yards |
| Rushing Yards | 258 Yards |
Sophomore Maurice Smith contributed significantly to the scoring effort, finding the end zone twice on the ground. Smith scored on a 14-yard run before breaking away for a 79-yard touchdown scamper to push the lead to 21-0.
Further scoring drives included a 52-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Andrew Lumsdaine, a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Moulden, a 16-yard run by Todd Lundy, and a 5-yard scoring pass from Brown to Amar’e McKenzie.
Looking Toward the Second Round
While the victory was a landmark achievement for the program, Coach Matthews expressed a cautious outlook regarding the team’s upcoming schedule. The Lions are set to host Friendship Christian on Friday in a second-round playoff matchup at Farragut High School.
“We have some good young kids, but this is all new to them,” Matthews said. “I told them that it’s only going to get harder. Friendship Christian is a tradition-rich program, and they’ve been here before, and they are coming in here expecting to win.”
Matthews said the team must maintain focus, citing a previous lesson from the regular season. After a notable win against Halls earlier this year, the team struggled in the subsequent game, an experience Matthews hopes his players have internalized.
“We played Halls earlier this year, and we beat them, and we were really high coming off of that,” he said. “Then, we came out the next week and laid an egg. I hope we learned from that.”
Fayette Academy managed to put two touchdowns on the board before halftime, but the deficit proved insurmountable as the Lions entered the break with a 49-14 lead. The upcoming contest against Friendship Christian represents the next step for Concord Christian as they attempt to build upon their historic 2026 season.
