Kelvin Sampson’s New-Look Houston Cougars Ready for 2026-27 Season

The Houston Cougars basketball team has sent an early warning to the rest of college basketball ahead of the 2026-27 season, following an impressive 83-66 exhibition win over the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Building a Roster Through the Transfer Portal

Head coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff faced a major offseason rebuild after four starters moved on from the program. Rather than relying on a class of five-star freshmen to grab national headlines, the coaching staff turned heavily to the transfer portal. This strategy has successfully shaped a roster that maintains the program’s trademark identity built on old-school physicality and defensive intensity.

That defensive foundation was complemented by unexpected offensive firepower during the team’s preseason tune-ups against Montana Tech and Michigan. While exhibition scores do not count toward official records, the 17-point victory over the Wolverines displayed notable roster depth and offensive versatility.

New Faces Leading the Backcourt and Frontcourt

Questions surrounded the new-look backcourt over the offseason, but senior point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. answered those doubts by putting up a game-high 25 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals against Michigan. In the frontcourt, transfer Delrecco Gillespie stepped up with 16 points and six rebounds, helping anchor the team while senior forward Joseph Tugler logged nearly 18 minutes with three points. Backup big man Braden East also contributed significantly on the glass by pulling down six rebounds.

Historically prone to occasional offensive droughts, the Cougars have added floor-spacing elements to complement their defense. Redshirt sophomore forward Chase McCarty provides 3-point shooting, while junior guard Mercy Miller has flashed growth on both ends of the floor. Veteran sixth-man guard Corey Hadnot Jr. brings scoring punch off the bench. Furthermore, frontcourt contributors like Gillespie and Tugler demonstrated a willingness to step out and attempt jump shots, adding a new layer to the offensive scheme.

Preseason Expectations in the Big 12

Voters and media members have taken notice of the revamped roster. Houston enters the 2026-27 campaign ranked No. 10 in the preseason AP Poll. In the Big 12 preseason media poll, the Cougars were picked to finish second, trailing only Arizona.
