Kentucky Kingdom to Debut World’s Largest Indoor Wooden Roller Coaster in 2027

Midnight Showdown Brings Record Wooden Coaster to Louisville

Kentucky Kingdom is set to open the world’s largest indoor wooden roller coaster in the spring of 2027, anchoring a sweeping overhaul of the Louisville amusement park. The new attraction, named Midnight Showdown, will serve as the centerpiece of Bluegrass Downs, a new land inspired by Kentucky’s horse racing legacy.

Standing more than three stories tall, the wooden coaster features 1,130 feet of track and operates with two trains designed to seat 10 riders each. Built by Cincinnati-based manufacturer The Gravity Group, the ride charges guests into the night, guided by pounding hooves and a booming call of “And they’re off!” while racing through the dark. As Kentucky Kingdom’s seventh roller coaster, the family-friendly attraction will also feature airtime and unexpected surprises.

Completing a Five-Year, $50 Million Transformation

The arrival of Midnight Showdown marks the final chapter in a massive capital improvement project that began when Herschend acquired Kentucky Kingdom in 2021. Over the past five years, the parent company has poured nearly $50 million into the property, orchestrating the most extensive redesign in the park’s history.

As Theme Park Insider noted, the park sits just a couple of miles away from Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The newly styled Bluegrass Downs land leans directly into that geographic proximity, surrounding the new coaster with white fences, grand spires, and vibrant colors borrowed from traditional jockey silks. Five existing rides are being thoroughly reimagined to match the equestrian theme, including the park’s Lightning Run roller coaster, which will be transformed into Stampede Run to send visitors dodging charging bulls and smashing through fences.

Happy Valley Farm Joins Park Expansion

The park’s 2027 overhaul also includes the debut of Happy Valley Farm, a second newly themed area that honors Kentucky’s agricultural roots. Anchored by a central barn adorned with sunflowers and red gingham banners, the zone encompasses the Flying Fox suspended family coaster that opened in May 2026, alongside eight updated rides such as Friendly Frogs, Loopy Lambs, and Country Cruisers.

“We’ve been building toward this for years, and 2027 is the moment guests will see just how far Kentucky Kingdom has come,” said Carly Uglow, Director of Sales and Marketing at Kentucky Kingdom. “From two brand-new roller coasters and reimagined lands to refreshed rides and new theming throughout the park, this is a very different Kentucky Kingdom than guests may remember from years past.”

Beyond its spring roller coaster debuts, the park has broadened its operating schedule in recent years to include seasonal programming like Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom and Christmas at Kentucky Kingdom. Season passes for 2027 are currently on sale starting at $69.99, granting buyers immediate admission to the remaining 2026 calendar—including the winter holiday event featuring over 1.5 million lights and Kentucky’s largest snow tubing hill, alongside 300 Christmas trees, holiday decor, themed entertainment, and food offerings—alongside full access when the park reopens next year.

New Family Attractions Open Across Louisville

The 2027 debut of Midnight Showdown coincides with a wave of new family-friendly destinations opening across Louisville that same year. These additions include the Son’s of the American Revolution Museum & Education Center, the Japanese Garden at Waterfront Botanical Gardens, AHOY! Children’s Museum, The Hat Vault Millinery Museum, and the Highland Bike Park.
