Mother Seeks Community Support for Laney High School Shooting Victim

The Cost of Recovery After the Laney High School Homecoming Shooting

Gemyia “Meme” Bowman spent years pouring into her community as a basketball player at Laney High School and Albany State University, a master’s degree graduate in criminal justice, a federal teacher, and a youth coach. On October 17, 2026, that life of service hit an abrupt wall. Bowman was one of three victims injured during a shooting at a Laney High School homecoming tailgate, according to reports from the Augusta Chronicle.

Now, her mother, Carolyn Forrest, is trying to manage the immense financial and emotional toll of her daughter’s ongoing healing process. Forrest launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the mounting expenses. These costs include specialized medical care, physical therapy, regular transportation to follow-up appointments, rent, daily living expenses, and lost income while Bowman recovers and Forrest steps in to care for her.

Arrests and Charges Stemming From the Incident

The violence erupted outside the stadium following Laney’s homecoming football game. According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, a physical confrontation broke out between Aiyana Lane and another woman. When bystanders intervened and broke up the fight, Lane reportedly drew a gun and opened fire.

Law enforcement officials subsequently arrested Lane on multiple serious charges. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Lane faces three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree child cruelty, and carrying weapons within school safety zones, at school functions, or on school transportation.

For victims like Bowman, the legal proceedings offer a measure of accountability, but the day-to-day reality remains defined by rehabilitation. As Forrest noted on the fundraising page, every contribution helps ease the burden and allows Bowman to focus entirely on her recovery.

Community Support and the Path Forward

The campaign has struck a chord with community members looking to support a local educator and coach. As of Sunday morning, donations totaled $1,815 toward an initial goal of $5,000.

Family members continue to ask for community support and prayers as they navigate the aftermath of the shooting. For a family accustomed to giving back through teaching and youth athletics, accepting help marks a difficult shift, but one made necessary by the long road ahead.
