NASA Updates Next Steps for Commercial Swift Boost Mission

The Swift Boost mission was born out of urgency. Launched originally in November 2004 for a two-year prime mission, Swift spent over two decades tracking high-energy cosmic phenomena, including gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and black-hole ejections. However, increased solar activity dramatically intensified atmospheric drag in low Earth orbit, causing the telescope to lose altitude much faster than anticipated. The company was tasked with building, testing, and launching the rescue vehicle on an aggressive nine-month timeline driven by the sun’s activity.

NASA should be willing to move quickly and take smart risks when the potential return is worth it, and that is exactly what we did with this mission, said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting. Although the primary objective of boosting the telescope has been abandoned, the mission is not entirely over. According to NASA, the LINK spacecraft will still attempt to conduct rendezvous and proximity operations near the Swift Observatory to demonstrate key capabilities for future in-space satellite servicing. Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee noted that the startup has gathered a tremendous amount of data from the flight that will inform future developments in autonomous robotic spacecraft servicing. Without intervention, NASA anticipates that the Swift observatory will dip into the atmosphere and burn up later this year. As the mission enters its final phase, space agency officials stated they will continue prioritizing options to react rapidly to sudden cosmic events while current missions help fill the scientific gap.
