Surpassing $100 Million for 2026
When nearly 60,000 runners line up across the five boroughs on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, they will carry more than personal ambitions across the finish line. New York Road Runners (NYRR) announced that its official charity fundraising for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon has already crossed the $100 million threshold, shattering previous benchmarks just days before the starting gun.
The achievement marks a dramatic acceleration from the 2025 race, where more than 14,000 charity runners brought in $80 million across roughly 600 nonprofit organizations. According to New York Road Runners, the organization expanded its Official Charity Partner Program to over 670 participating groups for 2026. Approximately 60 percent of those organizations are based right in New York City, up from 52 percent the previous year, anchoring the financial impact more heavily within the five boroughs.
Fifty Years of the Five-Borough Course
This historic fundraising milestone coincides with a major institutional anniversary. The New York City Marathon first stepped outside of Central Park in 1976, taking runners through all five boroughs to celebrate the U.S. What started fifty years ago as an ambitious route with 55 finishers in Central Park in 1970 has evolved into a global athletic spectacle drawing more than two million spectators.
This August, marathon hopefuls across the city found an unpleasant surprise in their email inboxes. Race fees were going up, and a popular selection process known as 9+1, which guaranteed marathon entry to anyone who ran nine races and volunteered at another, was being… pic.twitter.com/ees2yRbgYC
The structural expansion of the charity program reflects that half-century evolution. By broadening the roster of participating groups, NYRR has turned the marathon into a primary annual revenue engine for local social services, youth initiatives, and environmental projects.
Targeted Funding Through Team for Kids and Team for Climate
A substantial share of the marathon’s philanthropic muscle flows through specialized internal programs. NYRR Team for Kids, the organization’s premier charity running team established in 2002, has generated more than $138 million over nearly a quarter-century. That total includes nearly $11.4 million raised during the 2025 marathon season alone, directly funding free youth running programs and school-based initiatives designed to keep children active across the city.
Alongside youth sports, sustainability has become a formalized fundraising pillar. Now in its third year, NYRR Team for Climate brings 200 runners into a specialized sustainability-focused race experience. Launched in 2024 as the first marathon entry method tied directly to environmental mitigation, the initiative has raised more than $1.9 million—including nearly $650,000 in 2025—to fund carbon insetting and offsetting projects managed by NYRR.
Surpassing our $100 million fundraising goal is a remarkable testament to the generosity and dedication of our runners, charity partners, and supporters, said Rob Simmelkjaer, New York Road Runners CEO. Creating a lasting impact that extends far beyond race day, strengthens communities, and brings people together is what it’s all about.
As the final preparations conclude for race weekend, the focus turns from the ledger to the pavement. With nearly 60,000 participants preparing to tackle Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, the immediate financial outcome is already secured, setting a high-water mark for endurance athletics and urban philanthropy alike.
