Haley Stevens Stuns Democrats With Surprise Endorsement of Mike Rogers

Michigan Senate Race Shattered by Stevens Endorsement

Democratic party leaders found themselves unable to stave off an embarrassing schism in Michigan’s must-win Senate race, a crisis that offers a stark glimpse of internal battles to come. Representative Haley Stevens’ unexpected Sunday backing of Republican nominee Mike Rogers followed days of frantic back-and-forth negotiations and efforts to arrange a joint appearance with her former Senate primary opponent, Abdul El-Sayed.

A Detroit Church Appearance and Immediate Fallout

Less than 24 hours after promising colleagues that she would support El-Sayed, Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at a Detroit Black church. The move won praise from President Donald Trump and immediate calls for her eviction from the House Democratic Caucus. Yet the sheer shock of the breakdown was magnified by the extensive efforts senior Democrats had undertaken to prevent it.

Shuttle Diplomacy and Last-Minute Assurances

To project solidarity ahead of Tuesday’s pivotal elections, high-ranking party figures—including Representatives Debbie Dingell of Michigan and Jim Clyburn of South Carolina—worked intensely to align El-Sayed and Stevens. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland said on national television hours before Stevens’ defection that she had personally assured him on Saturday night she would be backing El-Sayed.

“I was blindsided, and I feel dumbfounded by the whole thing.”

Sharp Condemnation From Party Leadership

While the Senate race remains very close, it is not clear how much Stevens’ turnabout will affect the final balloting. Nevertheless, her actions have exposed severe internal fractures within the party, primarily centered around Israel and the leadership’s ties to the progressive faction.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries released a statement backing El-Sayed after the flap that did not mention Stevens, a member of his caucus, by name. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who had initially favored her as a better general election candidate than El-Sayed, called her endorsement of Rogers a “despicable betrayal.”

Long-Term Shadows Over the 2028 Primary

Many in the party believe leaders were powerless over Stevens. “I certainly don’t think it’s somebody else’s fault, other than Haley Stevens,” said a Michigan Democratic operative.

As Michigan—where El-Sayed faced challenges securing support from certain Black and Jewish voters prior to this week—positions itself among the initial Democratic nominating states, the party’s failure to unite during the final week of the race is poised to cast a long shadow well into the 2028 primary.
