Peppermint Oil Lowers Blood Pressure in New Clinical Trial

High blood pressure remains a major global health challenge, significantly increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. While lifestyle adjustments such as diets and exercise routines can help, adherence is frequently difficult for patients. Similarly, standard blood pressure medications are effective, but long-term efficacy is not always clear, and pharmaceutical treatments can produce unwanted side effects. These limitations have motivated researchers to investigate alternative, drug-free interventions.

New Clinical Trial Links Daily Peppermint Oil Dose to Blood Pressure Reductions

Addressing this need, a clinical trial published in PLOS One and conducted by researchers in the UK has tested the effects of a daily peppermint oil dose on human volunteers. According to the published research, taking 100 microliters of peppermint oil twice a day over a period of 20 days produced notable improvements in blood pressure readings among participants.

Clinical Trial Design and Results

The controlled experiment enrolled 40 volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 65 years old. All participants presented with either pre-hypertension—placing them just below the official threshold for high blood pressure—or stage 1 hypertension, representing the lower end of high blood pressure. The participants were randomly split into two groups: one group received the active peppermint oil supplement, while a comparison group received a peppermint-flavored placebo that lacked the active oil and showed no meaningful change.

The group taking the peppermint oil experienced an average reduction in systolic blood pressure—the top number in a reading—of 8.48 to 8.5 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) compared to the placebo group. In addition to lowering systolic measurements, participants in the peppermint group also showed an average drop of 4.57 mmHg in diastolic pressure, which is the bottom number in a reading. Furthermore, their resting heart rate was, on average, 8.92 beats per minute (bpm) slower than the placebo group after statistical adjustments were applied.

Researchers also tracked several other measures during the study, including body measurements, blood test results, mental well-being, and sleep quality.

Expert Insights and Potential Mechanisms

Peppermint naturally contains compounds including menthol and flavonoids, and plant extracts have long been utilized to ease stomach pain and bloating while providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Building on earlier research that tentatively suggested peppermint could help with hypertension, the study team sought to investigate further.

Our findings were very positive and they have significant clinical implications, especially given arterial hypertension is the most common preventable risk factor for cardiometabolic disease and the greatest single risk factor for global mortality, said lead author Dr. Jonnie Sinclair, a sports and health scientist and Reader in Sport and Health Sciences from the University of Lancashire.

Regarding why peppermint exerts this effect, researchers believe that the menthol present in the plant triggers a chemical reaction that relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow, though further study is required to confirm the exact mechanism. Peppermint oil is low in calories and price so it’s proved to be a very simple and cost-effective solution to potentially treat millions of people around the world, Sinclair noted.

Study Limitations and Next Steps

While the findings suggest that peppermint supplementation could serve as a valuable tool in managing pre-hypertension and stage 1 hypertension, researchers emphasize caution. The trial was relatively small and short in duration, and it utilized a controlled experiment featuring a particular kind of peppermint oil, a specific dosage, and a targeted group of patients. Experts advise that individuals should not rush to replicate the results on their own until future research can test the underlying hypotheses in full.
