A critical electrical failure at a piece of infrastructure is forcing a full day of closure at Santa Fe College’s Northwest Campus on Sunday, November 15, 2026. According to a report from sfcollege.edu, Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) must perform essential repairs to a college-owned Automatic Transfer Switch located near North Road and NW 83rd Street.
The shutdown is a preventative measure aimed at ensuring long-term electrical reliability. While the outage is scheduled for a single day, the technical requirements of the repair necessitate a total power disconnection. GRU must fully disconnect the power to the switch to inspect internal components, perform the necessary repairs, and test the equipment before returning it to service.
The scope of the electrical repair
The timeline for this maintenance began on August 10, when GRU notified the college of a failure within the Automatic Transfer Switch. Addressing the failure now is intended to reduce the risk of an unplanned, campus-wide outage in the future.

The scheduled work window is set from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. During this period, the Northwest Campus will be closed. However, the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo will remain open.
To manage the transition, college facilities staff will be on-site throughout the repair process. Their role is to monitor all utilities and ensure that power is operating properly as soon as the technical work is completed.
Minimizing the impact on campus life
Administrators selected the November 15 date to minimize impact on students and operations.

By choosing a Sunday, the college aims to minimize impact on students and operations. While the Northwest Campus faces this temporary closure, all other SF centers remain unaffected and will continue their regular schedules.
Normal operating hours for the Northwest Campus are expected to resume on Monday, November 16.
