Stepping Into the Shadows of Concord’s Historic Estate
Stepping inside the 18th-century Old Manse after dark offers an intimate look into rooms where history was lived and still lingers, according to a program outline detailed by The Trustees. Rather than a typical haunted house attraction, the seasonal experience relies on candlelight to guide visitors through spaces once occupied by Revolutionaries, philosophers, and literary figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne.
Uncovering True Stories Etched Into Walls and Windows
Visitors on the guided tour move room by room through the historic Concord home, encountering true stories pulled directly from historical letters, journals, and words etched onto windows and walls.

Guests can sit in the exact spaces where Emerson and Hawthorne wrote, view the landscape where the family watched the Battle of the North Bridge, and stand in the attic where ministers once practiced sermons and carved their names into wooden beams.
Navigating Accessibility and Steep Stairs
Because the historic structure features steep stairs across several flights, the tour is not wheelchair accessible and is best suited for guests aged 10 and older. Flashlights are provided for the low-light environment, and organizers ask attendees to arrive promptly at their designated time slots because late entries cannot be accommodated. Public restrooms are located nearby at Concord’s Visitor Center, as the historic site itself has no on-site restrooms. Parking is available directly in front of the museum in The Old Manse parking lot.
Navigating Strict Refund Deadlines and Severe Weather Policies
The organizing body maintains a strict cancellation framework. If The Trustees cancel a program due to severe weather, low enrollment, or other operational circumstances, registrants receive email notifications with options for a full refund or a program transfer within two weeks.

Visitors seeking to cancel their own reservations must contact the site at least seven days prior to the program start date to receive a full refund; cancellations requested fewer than seven days before the event are not eligible for refunds or transfers.
