Tropical Storm Pena Triggers Breezy Trade Winds and Increased Showers

Breezy Trades and High Surf Set for Hawaii

A combination of weather systems, including Tropical Storm Pena located well to the south, will drive a breezy trade wind pattern across Hawaii for the next several days. Hawaii News Now reported that this shift in wind flow is set to bring persistent showers, which will primarily favor windward and mauka locations.

Residents should prepare for an uptick in rainfall around Thursday as a cold front moves toward the islands from the north. While meteorologists are still determining the precise volume of expected precipitation, the First Alert Weather Team has signaled that increased shower activity is likely.

Changing Surf Conditions

Ocean conditions will remain dynamic throughout the week. A north-northwest swell is expected to peak overnight into Sunday morning, with north shore waves approaching the 15-foot high surf advisory threshold.

The weather team has issued a First Alert for a significantly larger northwest swell arriving Wednesday night, which could produce warning-level surf reaching 25 feet. Meanwhile, a smaller south-southwest swell is forecast to decline slightly from Sunday into the coming week.

For those near east-facing shores, surf remains rough and will stay at or above-average levels through the weekend. These conditions are expected to ease only slightly on Monday and Tuesday before strengthening again as the trade winds pick up velocity.

Planning with the First Alert Team

The current forecast is being monitored by the First Alert Weather Team, which includes chief meteorologist Jennifer Robbins and weather anchors Guy Hagi, Dan Cooke, Ben Gutierrez, and Billy V.

The team advises residents to utilize the Hawaii News Now weather app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, for real-time updates and planning tools. Staying informed is particularly important for those in coastal areas or those planning maritime activities, as the transition in swell size—from the current north-northwest pattern to the larger northwest swell later in the week—will significantly alter shorebreak safety.
