American Tourist Dies After Being Swept Away by Tides in Watamu

A 69-year-old American tourist, identified as Tony Mark Anderson, died on Monday after being swept away by strong tidal currents while hiking on an island near Seven Island Beach in Watamu, Kilifi County. Despite rescue efforts and emergency medical intervention, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Watamu Hospital.

The Incident at Seven Island Beach

The tragedy occurred during a coastal hike on an island situated off the coast of Watamu. According to reports, the incident took place at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Monday. Anderson was accompanied by a Kenyan companion when the pair attempted to return to the mainland as the tide began to rise.

As the water levels increased, the pair encountered powerful currents. While the companion attempted to assist Anderson, the force of the water rendered the rescue attempt unsuccessful. Both individuals were eventually retrieved by boat and transported back to the mainland. Upon arrival, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered to Anderson before he was rushed to Watamu Reef Hospital for emergency care.

Medical Response and Preliminary Investigations

Following his initial treatment at Watamu Reef Hospital, Anderson was referred to Watamu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police officers who responded to the incident noted that the victim’s body showed no visible external injuries. Preliminary findings from the authorities suggest the cause of death was drowning resulting from the strong tidal currents.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers based in Malindi have documented the scene, and police have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of the death are ongoing. Anderson’s body has since been transferred to Star Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to provide a formal determination of the cause of death.

Travel Context and Family Notification

Anderson had arrived in Kenya on July 11, 2026, accompanied by his wife and two children for a holiday. Local authorities have since notified his family of the tragedy. While the investigation remains open, police have focused on the environmental conditions—specifically the rising tides—as the primary factor that led to the incident.

Separate Fatal Incident in Uasin Gishu

In a separate incident on the same day, a 25-year-old construction worker died after falling from the third floor of a building under construction in the Koilel area of Ainabkoi Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County. The deceased was identified as Brian Wekesa Wanyonyi, who was employed as a breaker machine operator.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Monday while Wanyonyi was using a ladder to access the third floor to remove an unwanted concrete beam. Investigators stated that he slipped from the ladder and fell to the ground. He sustained severe head injuries as well as fractures to his left arm and left foot. Wanyonyi was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at about 3:30 p.m. His body was moved to the MTRH mortuary to await a post-mortem examination, and police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident.
