Boise Mayor Lauren McLean Proposes Immediate City Limits Moratorium on Mega Data Centers
Boise Mayor Lauren McLean has put forward a plan for a swift halt to the construction of mega data centers inside municipal boundaries, with the objective of stopping massive facilities before they get established. A public hearing is scheduled for the Boise City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 10, where lawmakers will consider whether to enact the ban immediately.
While the municipal government currently holds no active applications for mega data centers, the policy is designed as a preemptive safeguard. Across the nation, massive data facilities place extreme strains on land, water, and electrical power grids, alongside producing substantial heat, noise, and pollution.
These mega data centers don’t belong anywhere in Idaho, and in the absence of a state-wide moratorium, I’m pulling the emergency brake to protect Boiseans and our precious natural resources,
Mayor McLean stated.
Weighing Resource Demands Against Local Values
Boise joins a growing number of Idaho communities that have issued moratoria to curb industrial resource extraction.
BREAKING: Boise Mayor Lauren McLean is proposing a moratorium on mega data center development within city limits. A public hearing will be held at Boise City Council's Tuesday meeting on Nov. 10. If passed, the moratorium will take effect immediately.https://t.co/yVNqXzHZYp
Any growth in Boise has to align with our city’s values, and I’m drawing a line against unchecked mega data center development and making it clear where Boise stands,
McLean added, framing the policy as a defense of local infrastructure capacity.
Idaho has long seen outsiders try to extract wealth from our land and natural resources at the expense of our people and our environment,
McLean said. This is not new, and neither is our history of standing up against those who want to get rich quick while communities are left behind to pay the price.

Tuesday Hearing Sets Immediate Decision Path
The Boise City Council will review the emergency moratorium during the public session on November 10. City leadership notes that if the council votes to pass the measure, the prohibition takes effect immediately across all zones within city limits.
All scheduled Boise City Council meetings remain open to the public and are livestreamed via the city’s official YouTube channel for residents tracking the legislative process.
