British Tourist Drowns While Swimming at Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida

A 54-year-old British tourist drowned while swimming at Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida island near Bali during a family holiday. The tragedy occurred as local emergency services responded to a separate fatal fall involving another international traveler on the same Indonesian island.

Family Holiday Turns Fatal at Crystal Bay Beach

The man and his family were taking part in a sightseeing tour of Nusa Penida, an island located southeast of Bali within Indonesia’s Klungkung Regency, when the fatal incident unfolded. According to local police accounts detailed by the Irish Mirror, the family arrived at Crystal Bay Beach at approximately 2:30pm local time. Their driver left the group with an agreement to return roughly an hour later.

When the tourist failed to return to the designated meeting point, the driver initiated a search. Emergency responders transported the holidaymaker by ambulance to Griya Penida Medical Clinic, where medical personnel pronounced him dead despite resuscitation efforts.

“According to the medical team, the victim was pronounced dead after fluid entered his lungs, causing cardiac arrest as a result of drowning.”

Local authorities confirmed that the victim was a British citizen traveling with his family members. Police noted that it remains unclear what specifically caused him to get into difficulty in the water.

Tragedies on Nusa Penida Island

The drowning death took place just one day after a separate fatal accident occurred on the same island. On the morning prior, an Australian tourist died after plunging down a steep cliff at Kelingking Beach, a coastal destination on Nusa Penida also known as T-Rex Bay.

Police reported that the woman, a 29-year-old ecologist from Queensland, was attempting to find an independent path toward the edge of the 180-metre-high coastal cliff before slipping into the ravine. Initially located stuck on the side of the drop, she plummeted further down to the shoreline as emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

“When found, the victim had sustained several fractures; we secured her onto a stretcher to facilitate the evacuation process.”
