Jennifer Lawrence has confirmed she will return as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping, which arrives in cinemas on November 20.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper, the 36-year-old actress revealed that Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson are also returning to the franchise as Peeta Mellark and Haymitch Abernathy. The announcement follows months of speculation regarding the original cast’s involvement in the new film, which is a prequel set 24 years before the original story.

Reuniting the Original Cast

Lawrence described the experience of returning to the production as

“unbelievable”

and

“so crazy.”

noting that the project utilized the same crew. She shared that reuniting with Hutcherson and Harrelson was emotional, stating that she and Hutcherson

“didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.”

Lawrence also joked about Harrelson’s return, claiming he entered her hotel room uninvited through a window, adding that

“it wouldn’t be the same if he listened to boundaries or used a door.”

The Prequel Storyline

Based on the 2025 novel by Suzanne Collins, the film focuses on the 50th Hunger Games. It stars Joseph Zada as a younger version of Haymitch, who competes against other tributes, including Maysilee Donner, played by Mckenna Grace.

The inclusion of the original cast follows the structure of the novel, which contains an epilogue featuring Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch.

Franchise History

The series began with the first film in 2012, adapted from Collins’s novel about a totalitarian society that forces youth to fight to the death on live television. The franchise later expanded with the 2020 prequel novel The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, which became a 2023 film starring Hunter Schafer, Tom Blyth, and Rachel Zegler.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping is scheduled for release on 20 November.
