15 Months Jail for Sydney Teacher Tayla Lee Brailey Over Student Abuse

Former Sydney teacher Tayla Lee Brailey was sentenced to 15 months in prison on October 28, 2026, after pleading guilty to sexual offences involving two male students. The Parramatta District Court found Brailey abused her authority to exploit teenagers in 2024, including having sex with a student in a vehicle.

Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, received a 15-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges that included sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old and sexually touching a 16-year-old. Both students were under special care. Judge Elizabeth Ryan ruled a custodial sentence was the only appropriate penalty for this breach of trust between an educator and students.

Brailey Uses Social Media to Target Students

Brailey used social media to initiate and maintain contact with her victims. She added a 17-year-old Year 12 student on Snapchat and requested that he keep their interaction secret to avoid getting her into trouble. The court heard they had sex in the student’s car before Brailey returned to the school campus.

A 16-year-old student was also targeted via social media. Brailey asked do you like what you see? before sending a photo of herself in the shower. When the student sent an explicit photo in return, Brailey replied yum.

Court Rejects Defense of Bipolar Disorder

Brailey claimed she did not have an attraction to children and viewed the teenagers as adults she did not wish to reject. Judge Ryan rejected this, noting Brailey persisted in pursuing the younger victim despite his reluctance.

A psychologist’s report indicated Brailey had been experiencing symptoms of an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. This condition allegedly caused an increased sex drive and impaired judgment during the 2024 offences. Judge Ryan noted Brailey took steps to avoid detection while offending.

Throughout her offending, Ms Brailey knew what she was doing was wrong but she persisted with it.

I don’t think that feeling will ever go away … I don’t know what to do about it other than blame myself for interacting with her.

Judge Orders Prison and Registry Listing

Detectives first arrested Brailey at a southwest Sydney school in August 2024. She was arrested again less than two weeks after being released on bail following charges related to a second student.

Judge Ryan acknowledged letters from Brailey’s family stating the crimes cost her her husband, reputation, and career, but emphasized that the harm to the education system’s trust required imprisonment.

  • Prison Term: 15 months of imprisonment.
  • Parole Eligibility: Brailey will be eligible for parole on April 24, 2027.
  • Child Protection: Brailey must be placed on the NSW Police child protection register for 15 years.

Ms Brailey made terrible mistakes. She used her position as a teacher and as an adult to abuse young persons.
