The official poster and trailer for *Digger*, a new black comedy directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, were released on Monday. The film, which features Tom Cruise in a significant physical transformation, is scheduled for theatrical release on October 2.
In the film, Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, an oil baron whose company is believed to have triggered a catastrophic ecological crisis. According to the film’s logline and trailer, the disaster threatens to spark a nuclear war, prompting Rockwell to embark on a desperate mission to convince the world that he is the only person capable of saving humanity before the consequences of his actions destroy everything.
A New Kind of Transformation
To embody Rockwell, Cruise has moved away from his typical action-hero persona, adopting a thick Southern accent, a pot belly, and thinning white hair styled in a combover. The film’s makers have described the project as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
Cruise, who spoke at a launch event at Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, noted that the role challenged him in ways unlike any previous project. “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither had Alejandro when we went in, ever,” Cruise stated. He further remarked that the film is “totally original.”
The supporting cast for *Digger* includes John Goodman, who portrays an ailing U.S. president tasked with urging Rockwell to address the crisis, as well as Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Sophie Wilde.

The Creative Partnership
The collaboration between Cruise and Iñárritu follows a long-standing mutual admiration. Cruise noted that he has been a fan of the director since seeing his 2000 debut feature, *Amores Perros*. Iñárritu began developing the concept for *Digger* following the completion of his 2015 film *The Revenant*. Rather than sending a traditional screenplay, Iñárritu pitched the film to Cruise seven years ago by reading the script aloud to him over several days. “I’m listening to everything that’s in his mind, so that I can understand that, and then I know how to contribute to it, and bring that collaboration together,” Cruise said.
Technical Ambition and Production
The film is an original production from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. It was shot entirely on VistaVision, a high-definition analog process that originated in the 1950s. The technical team behind the film includes cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who previously worked with Iñárritu on *The Revenant*.
The screenplay was written by Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, based on a story by Iñárritu and Berman. The film is produced by Iñárritu, Mary Parent, Tom Cruise, and Michael Sharp.

Reflecting on the production’s level of detail, Cruise emphasized the collaborative effort involved in building the character. “The level of detail of making a film like this is… Color of the cowboy boots. What are my shorts like? The sets, the color of the sets. They’re beautiful on every single level,” Cruise said.
Following the release of the trailer, the film’s marketing campaign has utilized the tagline: “Digg. Or Die.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to arrive in cinemas on October 2.
