Western Oregon Snaps Skid with Five-Set Win Over Nanooks
Western Oregon University Athletics ended a five-game losing streak on Thursday night, battling back from an initial blowout to defeat the University of Alaska Fairbanks in a five-set volleyball match. The Wolves secured the victory at the Alaska Airlines Gym in Fairbanks, finishing with set scores of 11-25, 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, and 15-12.
The result, reported by the university’s athletic department, brings the Wolves to a 9-15 overall record for the 2026 season and moves them to 5-11 within the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). For the Nanooks, the loss drops their standing to 11-14 overall and 3-12 in conference play, while simultaneously cementing a season sweep for Western Oregon.
A Tale of Two Starts
The match began in a way that suggested a quick night for the home team. The Nanooks, energized by a crowd of 598 fans, dominated the opening set with a .391 hitting percentage to cruise to a 25-11 victory. However, the momentum shifted significantly in the second frame. The two teams remained deadlocked at 12-12 before the Wolves put together a 6-0 run, effectively resetting the pace of the match and taking the set 25-20.
Western Oregon maintained that control into the third set, establishing an early 9-8 lead and refusing to relinquish it. By keeping the Nanooks at bay, the visitors secured a second 25-20 win, putting them one set away from ending their losing streak.
The Final Set Dynamics
Alaska Fairbanks refused to concede without a fight. In the fourth set, the Nanooks overcame deficits of 5-1 and 17-15, utilizing a late 4-0 scoring surge to force a decider with a 25-21 win. Despite this late-match resurgence from the home side, the fifth set belonged to the Wolves.

Western Oregon sprinted out to an 8-2 lead in the final set, a cushion that proved necessary as the Nanooks attempted a late comeback. The Wolves ultimately held off the challenge to close out the 15-12 finale.
