Democrats win in redrawn districts in Florida, North Carolina and Alabama

Midterm Setbacks Hit Redrawn Congressional Maps as Democrats Hold Ground

Sweeping victories by Democrats on Tuesday included wins in several congressional districts that Republicans had redrawn explicitly to boost their party ahead of the midterms, NPR reported. Republicans had braced for potential losses in this election cycle, prompting President Trump to urge his party last year to take the extraordinary step of engaging in mid-decade redistricting efforts.

As of Tuesday night, many of those map-redrawing efforts had failed to deliver the expected partisan advantage.

Defeats in Florida, North Carolina, and Alabama

In Florida, multiple Democrats won in redrawn districts, according to race calls by the Associated Press. Those victories included Kathy Castor, Pia Dandiya, and Jared Moskowitz.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, Democratic Rep. Don Davis held on to his 1st District seat. Republicans in the state had redrawn that district to make it more competitive for the GOP. According to the Downballot, Trump would have won the redrawn 1st District by nearly 12 percentage points.

Trump would have won by an even larger margin in Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District, which Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures held on to according to an AP race call. Republicans in Alabama redid the state’s congressional map after the U.S. Supreme Court further weakened the Voting Rights Act earlier this year.

Texas Shifting Voter Dynamics

Texas was the first state to redistrict at Trump’s urging, yet a few of the redrawn districts still went to Democrats.

Republicans had redrawn their maps with the expectation that the coalition of voters Trump won over in 2024 would support them this cycle. In Texas, the GOP was banking specifically on gains made with Latino voters in the new maps. Instead, many of those voters shifted their support to Democrats this year.
