Former Partner of Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John Charged With Stalking and Extortion

A 40-year-old Perth woman has been charged with aggravated stalking and demanding property by written threats in connection with her former partner, Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John. The woman was arrested by Western Australian police and is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court.

The charges allege the woman engaged in stalking with intent to intimidate and attempted extortion against Senator Steele-John. The senator is currently on leave from parliament following allegations of inappropriate conduct raised by a group of current and former Greens staffers. Senator Steele-John has denied these allegations, stating they were made by his former partner after the breakdown of their relationship. Nine.com.au has contacted Steele-John for comment.

Charges and Court Appearance

On Wednesday, detectives from the WA Police Family Violence Investigation Squad formally charged the 40-year-old woman. She faces one count of “aggravated stalking with intent to intimidate” and one count of “demanding property by written threats,” commonly known as extortion. The woman was granted bail after appearing in court and must adhere to several conditions, including handing over her passport to police and staying at least 100 metres away from Senator Steele-John, his home, his work, and his place of education. She is scheduled to return to court on February 25.

Background on the Allegations

The charges against the woman come amid a separate but related controversy for Senator Steele-John. In October, he took leave from parliament after a group of seven current and former Greens members and political staffers sent a letter to party leader David Shoebridge. The letter raised “multiple allegations of serious misconduct” by Senator Steele-John relating to “his behaviour in the presence of women” between 2017 and 2025. The authors of the letter referred to an allegation of “serious sexual misconduct” in 2025, which Senator Steele-John confirmed was made by his former partner after their relationship ended.

Independent Inquiry

In response to the allegations, the WA Greens has commissioned an independent inquiry to investigate the claims. The probe, which is expected to last at least eight weeks with an interim report due in six weeks, will examine the timeline and nature of the alleged conduct and determine whether it breached parliamentary or party codes of conduct. The inquiry will also investigate a “crisis comms” document related to the allegations. Senator Shoebridge has stated that leave was appropriate and that he would not prejudge the inquiry. Senator Shoebridge’s office declined to comment on the ongoing court matter and the inquiry.
