More than 2.2 million Pakistanis have registered for a government fuel relief scheme amid surging oil prices driven by Middle East tensions. Sharif announced the subsidy to cushion low-income motorists, offering discounts on petrol for motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars across the nation.
Pakistan has registered more than 2.2 million people under a special fuel relief scheme designed to cushion low-income motorists from the impact of surging oil prices. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced the registration milestone, noting that the government is planning to expand the program amid global price shocks driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East between the US and Iran, alongside Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Sharif’s Relief Structure and Subsidy Tiers
Sharif last week announced a subsidy of Rs100 [$0.36] per liter for owners of motorcycles and three-wheelers for up to 20 liters of petrol a month. Owners of cars with engines of up to 800cc can claim the same discount on up to 30 liters.
To make the program more accessible, officials removed the requirement for motorists to purchase a minimum of five liters of fuel in a single transaction, according to the minister. Furthermore, motorcycles, qingqi rickshaws, and standard rickshaws that require less than five liters of petrol will also receive a Rs500 discount once a week against a single token, according to Sharif’s office. All motorcycles, rickshaws, and qingqis registered after January 1, 2006, are eligible for registration under the scheme.
Soaring Fuel Costs and Nationwide Registration Progress
The relief rollout coincides with multiple price hikes for petroleum products over the past few weeks. A liter of petrol currently costs Rs389.14 [$1.4], while high-speed diesel is priced at Rs424.04 [$1.53].
Real-Time Monitoring and Free SMS Registration
A 24-hour control room is actively monitoring the scheme in real time, tracking registrations, token generation, and token redemption across the country. According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Punjab and Islamabad have recorded the highest number of fuel subsidy token redemptions so far.
The scheme covers owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc across Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. To eliminate barriers to entry, the government has also made registration messages sent to 9771 free. Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said telecom operators had been directed to waive the Rs. 1.40 charge previously applied to these messages. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasized that the subsidy scheme had been introduced for the people who were most deserving of relief, noting that around 25 million motorcycles were registered in Pakistan whose users could benefit from the scheme.
