Wikimedia Indonesia and English Club Project Host WikiLatih Workshop

WikiLatih brings Wikipedia training to the English Club Project in South Jakarta

On August 9, 2026, a collaborative training session named WikiLatih brought the mechanics of open knowledge editing to the English Club Project at the Kopi Godog cafe in South Jakarta. The event was designed to introduce Wikipedia, its sister projects, and the broader Wikimedia ecosystem as a space for self-development and community building.

Unlike standard workshops organized by the local chapter, this specific program used English as its primary instruction language, falling back on Indonesian to clarify local contexts and technical nuances. Naveesha Mazaya Prayoga directed the initiative as Wikimedia Indonesia’s person-in-charge for the program, while C. Cecilia led the effort for the English Club Project, backed by fellow members Saphira and Naila.

Technical preparation and anti-abuse management

Hosting public workshops in shared venues often triggers automated open proxy blocks or IP restriction limits on Wikipedia during mass account creation. To prevent these obstacles, a technical coordination meeting was held five days prior to the event to align registration flows and anticipate hurdles.

Account requests were managed ahead of time through the Account Creation Improvement Tool, alongside granting IP Block Exempt permissions where necessary. Participants were also encouraged to set up anonymous accounts beforehand to safeguard their privacy while making public contributions.

Curriculum and interactive learning methods

The training curriculum covered the fundamentals of the Wikimedia movement, governance structures, community policies, article writing, and user profile customization. Alongside standard materials, the lead trainer presented out-of-the-box examples, including instances of vandalism on the Indonesian Wikipedia.

English club conference

While presented with humorous elements to engage the room, the examples served as a serious warning about protecting the integrity of online articles. Participants also learned about the professional and networking opportunities available through regular contributions, such as conferences and connections with experienced volunteers.

By 4:00 PM WIB, participants had successfully established their accounts, customized their user pages, and published their first edits. Feedback from the attendees highlighted a strong enthusiasm for continuing their work with free knowledge projects.
