Kercher later told the BBC that her sister Meredith wouldn’t find these topics of any comedy value and stated that the performance has forced her family to relive the trauma of the tragedy nearly two decades later.

Public Backlash and Petitions Against the Performance

The stand-up show has drawn significant public opposition, with a petition calling for the cancellation of The Independent gathering over 2,400 signatures. The petition was initiated by Sally Alington, described as a close friend of the Kercher family. Alington characterized the performance as an attempt to turn tragedy into entertainment and argued that it mocks the events surrounding the murder. Relatives of Meredith Kercher, through their lawyer Francesco Maresca, have similarly described the show as offensive and deplorable.

The petition asserts that the production disrespects Meredith Kercher’s memory and risks normalizing violence against women by making light of harrowing events. In response, a spokesperson for Knox stated that the petition contains false assumptions and mischaracterizes the production. Gilded Balloon, the venue hosting the show, issued a statement noting that it provides a platform for a wide range of voices in line with the Fringe’s commitment to freedom of expression, while leaving creative and financial responsibility with the participating artists and companies.
